Behavior-Informed Instruction

Learning happens when students actively respond — and get feedback.

For RBTs and the K–5 teams they work with: build engagement into every step of instruction — more student responses, better feedback, smarter error correction and fewer escape behaviors — without lowering expectations.

At a glance

What’s included

8modules from ABC basics to full lesson design
80%+student response target during practice
K–5reading, writing and math case studies
PDUsfor RBTs (approval pending)

Is this for you?

Built for everyone who delivers the lesson.

Who this is for

  • RBTs supporting students in K–5 classrooms
  • Paraprofessionals and other behavior staff
  • General and special education teachers and co-teaching teams
  • Schools and agencies training their instructional teams

Skills you’ll gain

  • Use the ABC model to plan instruction, not just manage behavior
  • Build active student responding into every lesson
  • Deliver specific reinforcement and quick, encouraging error correction
  • Prevent escape with task analysis, scaffolding, choice and pacing

Outcomes you’ll achieve

  • Lessons where most students respond, not just volunteers
  • Fewer avoidance behaviors during hard tasks
  • Feedback that builds persistence and independence
  • A repeatable lesson structure for any subject

The behavior-informed lesson

One sequence. Every lesson.

Build skills step by step — from modeling, to supported practice, to independence — while every student stays engaged.

STEP 5

Independent Practice

Engagement check

80%+ responding

If most students aren’t responding during practice, add more active responding before moving on.

Error correction

Model → Guide → Try

Brief, specific and encouraging — 30–60 seconds, then back to the lesson.

Prevent escape

Too hard? Unclear? Too much?

Match the trigger to task analysis, clearer supports, structured choice or smaller chunks.

Course structure

Eight modules, from engagement to lesson design.

Short, practical lessons with a knowledge check after each module.

1

Behavior and Learning

Learning depends on behavioral engagement. The ABC model (antecedent → behavior → consequence) applied to everyday instruction.

2

Active Student Responding

Choral responding, response cards, think-pair-share and guided practice — aiming for 80%+ of students responding.

3

Reinforcement in Instruction

Specific praise, token systems and group reinforcement — and how to fade them toward intrinsic motivation.

4

Error Correction

Model → guided practice → independent attempt, in 30–60 seconds, preserving confidence and effort.

5

Preventing Instructional Escape

When tasks feel too hard, unclear or overwhelming: task analysis, scaffolding, structured choice and pacing.

6

Behavior-Informed Lesson Design

Putting it together in one lesson sequence that maximizes engagement and prevents avoidance.

7

Classroom Case Studies

A 4-step framework practiced with real K–5 reading, writing and math cases.

8

Course Wrap & Application

Bringing the tools together into your own lessons.

Credit & certificates

One course, the right credit for each role.

RBTs need 12 PDUs in each 2-year renewal cycle. This course is being prepared as RBT Professional Development under the BACB’s RBT PD requirements. Approval pending.

RBTs

  • RBT PDUs once approved, on the BACB’s official form
  • Content tied to the RBT role and Ethics Code
  • Knowledge checks in every module
