Adapting Any PE Lesson

Universal Design for Learning, in practice

One lesson plan. Every student in it.

Learn to adapt the lesson you already teach so every student takes part: equipment, rules, space, groups and instruction. You finish with the BxM Adapted Lesson Plan template and three sample adapted lessons.

The problem

Most PE lessons are planned for the middle of the class.

Students with disabilities end up sitting out, doing something different on the side, or being helped through every step. A few simple changes can bring them back into the same lesson.

01

Sitting out

The activity was not planned with them in mind.

02

A separate activity

The student is in the gym but not in the class.

03

Unsafe adaptations

Changes made on the spot, without a safety check.

04

Changing the goal by accident

An accommodation turns into a modification without anyone deciding it.

What you will learn

5 lessons to adapt any lesson

Each lesson has a short video, a deep dive, a real school case study and a quiz.

1

Accommodations vs. modifications

When you change how the student learns, and when you change what they learn.

2

Universal Design for Learning in PE

Plan from the start for the widest range of students.

3

Adapting equipment, rules, space and groups

The four levers you can change in any activity.

4

Safety and risk–benefit

Keep students safe without taking away the challenge.

5

Questions

Good to know

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. You earn a BxM certificate of completion with 5 hours, to show your school, district or employer.

Does it count for continuing education?

The type of credit (for example BACB CEUs or teacher professional development hours) depends on the approvals BxM holds when the course opens. We will list it clearly before you enroll. Teacher PD hours are set by each state, so check your state’s rules.

Is it part of the full certificate?

Yes. It comes from Module 4 of the 68-hour Adapted Physical Education & Behavior Professional Development Certificate. If you continue to the full certificate later, you will not repeat these lessons.
