Assent-Based Safety Training
Assent Safety Practitioner
Most crises don’t start with aggression. They start with a learner quietly saying “no” — and nobody noticing.
This course trains your RBTs to see withdrawal early, respond with the least restrictive option, and document every safety event the way an auditor would want to read it.
At a glance
What’s included
The problem
The escalation loop is predictable — and preventable.
When a learner slows down, looks away or stalls, too many technicians read it as defiance. They prompt harder, move closer, raise their voice — and the learner escalates to escape.
01
Withdrawal
The learner slows down or turns away.
02
Mislabeled
It gets called “noncompliance” or “defiance.”
03
More pressure
Louder tone, less distance, more prompts.
04
Crisis
The learner is pushed into high-intensity behavior.
Assent Basic Safety breaks the loop at step one.
What makes this different
A shared safety standard your whole team can follow.
Assent is treated as data
RBTs learn the observable markers of willingness and the early signs it is being withdrawn — latency, turning away, verbal stalling.
A decision system, not improvisation
The 5-step Assent Safety Decision Tree gives every technician the same logic under stress.
Least restrictive, always
A clear restriction hierarchy, and four criteria any override must meet: necessary, proportionate, temporary, documented.
Certified on performance
Finishing the lessons does not earn the credential. Your RBTs must demonstrate the skills.
The core tool
The Assent Safety Decision Tree
Five steps, in order, every time. It slows the reaction down so every safety decision is a clinical choice, not a reflex.
1
Describe
Objective behavior. No labels.
2
Assess assent
Willingness or withdrawal?
3
Classify risk
Escalation or imminent risk?
4
Select response
Least restrictive option first.
5
Restore & document
Return choice. Record why.

Certification
Earned by performance, not attendance.
The certificate is issued only when every component is passed. If one is missed, the RBT gets specific feedback and targeted retraining, with up to three attempts in total.
- 1Complete all 14 lessons and their worksheets.
- 2Pass the knowledge exam with 80% or higher.
- 3Demonstrate the skills in supervisor-scored role-play simulations.
- 4Receive a supervisor review of day-to-day fidelity.
- 5Submit three objective, behavior-based incident reports.
Who it’s for
RBTs and behavior technicians working in ABA clinics, schools and home programs — and the clinics that want one shared, defensible safety standard across their entire team.
What this course is not
Assent Basic Safety is a non-physical decision-making certification. It does not teach or authorize restraint, holds or physical control techniques, and it does not replace your agency’s crisis training, policies or state regulations.
Pricing
One RBT or your whole team.
For clinic owners and clinical directors
One protocol. One vocabulary. One documentation standard.
Your supervising BCBAs score the role-plays and review worksheets, so the certification reflects what actually happens in your sessions.
