A non-physical, competency-based certification for RBTs and behavior technicians: recognize assent and its withdrawal early, follow the 5-step Assent Safety Decision Tree, choose the least restrictive response, and document every safety event objectively.
About this course
Most crises don't start with aggression. They start with a learner quietly saying "no" — and nobody noticing. Assent-Based Safety Training, Level 1 (Assent Safety Practitioner) teaches RBTs and behavior technicians to see withdrawal early, respond with the least restrictive option, and document every safety event the way an auditor would want to read it.
Who it's for
RBTs and behavior technicians working in ABA clinics, schools and home programs — and clinics that want one shared, defensible safety standard across their whole team.
What you will learn
- Module 1 — Foundations: what assent is, recognizing assent withdrawal, ethics and the least restrictive principle, and the Assent Safety Decision Tree.
- Module 2 — Non-physical safety skills: safety positioning and space, tone and verbal regulation, demand modification under escalation, environmental adjustment and prevention.
- Module 3 — Integrated application: a full Decision Tree walkthrough, escalation mapping and error analysis, assent restoration and documentation standards.
- Module 4 — Evaluation & integrity: competency evaluation standards, professional conduct under stress, certification integrity and scope boundaries.

How certification works
Certification is earned by performance, not attendance. You must complete all 14 lessons and worksheets, pass the Knowledge Exam (80% or higher), demonstrate the skills in supervisor-scored role-plays, receive a supervisor review of day-to-day fidelity, and submit three objective incident reports. If a component is missed, you get specific feedback and targeted retraining, with up to three attempts in total.
What Level 1 is not
Level 1 is a non-physical decision-making certification. It does not teach or authorize restraint, holds or physical control techniques, and it does not replace your agency's crisis training, policies or state regulations.
